MR. FLEET: Yes; some on the forecastle light and some on the weather deck.
SENATOR SMITH: How much?
MR. FLEET: Not much; only where she rubbed up against it.
SENATOR SMITH: Did Lee and you talk over this black object that you saw?
MR. FLEET: Only up in the nest.

SENATOR SMITH: Did Lee survive this wreck, or was he drowned?
MR. FLEET: He one that survived it.
SENATOR SMITH: You can not recollect just what he said to you when she struck?
MR. FLEET: No, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: Nor when you first sighted this black mass?
MR. FLEET: No, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: Who sighted the black mass first; you or Lee?
MR. FLEET: I did: I say I did, but I think he was just as soon as me.
SENATOR SMITH: Were you both looking ahead?
MR. FLEET: We were looking all over the place, all around.
SENATOR SMITH: All over the sea?

M. FLEET : Non, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y en a-t-il eu?
M. FLEET : Juste un léger bruit de meulage.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pas assez pour vous déranger dans votre position dans le nid de pie?
M. FLEET : Non, monsieur.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que Lee et vous avez parlé de cet objet noir que vous avez vu?
M. FLEET : Seulement dans le nid de pie.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’avez-vous dit à ce sujet? Qu’est-ce qu’il vous a dit à ce sujet ou qu’est-ce que vous lui avez dit?
M. FLEET : Avant de faire mon rapport, j’ai dit : « Il y a de la glace devant moi », puis j’ai mis ma main sur la cloche et j’ai sonné trois fois, puis je suis allé au téléphone.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’a-t-il dit?
M. FLEET : Il n’a pas dit grand-chose. Il a commencé à chercher. Il regardait vers l’avant pendant que j’étais au téléphone et il a vu le navire aller à bâbord.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-ce que Lee a survécu à ce naufrage ou s’est-il noyé?
M. FLEET : Il est l’un de ceux qui ont survécu.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous ne vous rappelez pas ce qu’il vous a dit lorsqu’il a frappé?
M. FLEET : Non, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ni lorsque vous avez aperçu cette masse noire pour la première fois?
M. FLEET : Non, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qui a aperçu la masse noire en premier; vous ou Lee?
M. FLEET : Moi, je dirais que c’est moi, mais je pense qu’il l’a fait en même temps que moi.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Regardiez-vous tous les deux vers l’avant?
M. FLEET : Nous cherchions partout, partout.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Partout en mer?
